Sonshine In The Park, began as an idea of an outreach ministry, by drawing people to hear the word of God through music. The idea was to create a family type setting, where food and concessions would be available, kids could run free, and people who may not regularly attend church might come and bring their family and be ministered to all at the same time.
In 2009, Kim Parnell took the idea to her church family at Community Freewill Baptist Church. The Lord had placed a need in her heart to put on a free gospel concert in the Kiefer City Park, which that year would feature bluegrass gospel sensation, The Isaacs. Knowing that it would take around $10,000 to put on an event of this magnitude, it was discussed with the church, which began to create an excitement that had not been felt before.
There are wonderful concerts around at local venues such as the Mabee Center; however there are lots of folks who cannot spend $22-$60 per ticket for a concert. This is a wonderful way that everybody can come and there is NO admission. We even give away nice door prizes, and this year will include a framed Mardel print, a handmade quilt, and even a guitar.
“It was a huge step of faith,” Kim says, but her church family has been behind it all the way. Even the other 3 area Kiefer churches became involved, raising funds, and helping wherever they were needed. We had numerous pastors and churches represented at the concert last year. We had the Isaacs give an invitation at the end of the concert, and we even had 6-7 folks who accepted Christ. We gave out salvation packets, which included a bible, along with information about all of the area churches, so that people could choose their place of worship.
This entire event is done completely by sponsorships and donations. If your business would like to become a partner with Sonshine In The Park, your sponsorship of $300 will include a year long advertisement on this webpage, along with a link to your website if you have one. We appreciate your support of this event, and hope to see it continue to get larger every year.
